The Walled City is the original, historic part of Cartagena, where you'll spend most of your days since it holds the main attractions. Walking along the top of the colonial walls feels like stepping back in time: from there you can admire the Caribbean Sea, the historic cannons, and the most famous sunset in Colombia.
Cheerful by day and romantic by night, it's the perfect place to try a coconut lemonade or take a photo with "La Gorda Gertrudis," Botero's sculpture.
The largest military structure built by the Spanish in the Americas, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 17th century on a hilltop, it was the main defense against pirates. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or Uber.
The underground tunnels and the views from the top are breathtaking. A guided tour is recommended to understand its strategic importance.
Once a rebel neighborhood, today it's the epicenter of street art in Cartagena. Its murals tell stories of freedom and identity. At night it turns into an open-air party, with bars playing salsa, champeta, and jazz where locals and travelers mix.
An archipelago of 28 islands off the coast, in the heart of the Caribbean. If you're not staying on them, the typical excursion involves snorkeling in their crystal-clear waters. Just 45 minutes away by boat is Playa Blanca (Barú), ideal for relaxing or diving.
There are day trips across several islands; some include a typical lunch and activities like paddle boarding and diving.
Dating from the 16th century, it's one of the oldest cathedrals in Latin America. Its yellow façade is a photographic gem, and from its tower you can take in Cartagena's orange rooftops with the sea behind them.
Next to Plaza Bolívar, it preserves the legacy of the Zenú people with goldwork, ceramics, and indigenous art. It has free entry and is perfect for a quick cultural visit.
The Clock Tower is the gateway to the Walled City and one of the most photographed spots. In the arcades around the square you'll find traditional Caribbean sweets: cocadas, enyucados, and alegrías.
At the top sits the convent of the Virgin of La Candelaria, patron saint of Cartagena, full of history and devotion. Go up early by taxi or tour to avoid the heat and enjoy the viewpoint without crowds.
The "Colombian Miami": modern skyscrapers, shopping malls, and a long seafront boardwalk. Ideal if you want to stay with direct sea views and easy beach access.
The most authentic side of the city. Here you can try mote de queso, sancocho, or arepa de huevo. It's not a typical tourist area, so going with a local guide is recommended for a safe experience.
